Sokoto State Government has received the first contingents of the state-sponsored 15 students from the Republic of Sudan.
Receiving the 15 students Wednesday at Sultan Abubakar III International Airport Sokoto, the executive chairman of Sokoto State Scholarship Board, Hon. Sadeeq Abubakar Sanyinna commended the state and Federal Government for their bold initiative.
The chairman who was represented by the board’s permanent member Hajiya Inno Attahiru however stated that Sokoto state has over 100 sponsored students in Sudan and he is optimistic all of them would be evacuated back home within the next few weeks.
He said all the 15 students who arrived at Sultan Abubakar III International Airport Sokoto were in perfect health condition.
According to him, the state government is working hand in hand with the Nigerian embassy in Sudan with a view to securing a safe corridor for the evacuation of the remaining students still at the border.
Speaking with one of the returnees Nura Mohammed Bello said what he saw in Sudan before his evacuation with other students to the border was heal, shelling, and bombardment of all available targets.
“We were running helter-skelter to find refuge as military Jets intensify bombing campaign in and around Khartoum the Sudan’s Capital.
“I had never thought we will make it to the border as the convoy of Bus living the country become stark as we struggle to reach our destination at the border where we mate many already for evacuation.
“I will not go back to Sudan, I will rather stay in my country to continue with my educational pursuit.” It is not easy to study outside one’s country, especially at a time of war, like the one we witness in Sudan” says Bello.
Also in her remarks at the Airport, a Mother to one of the female returnees, Hajiya Larai Mohammed Galadima who was in higher spirits to see her only female Daughter alerting from error contractors airline express happiness for receiving her daughter after weeks of complicating reports of their whereabouts.
“I can not tell you how happy I am right now, but I have to commend and thank all those who contributed in one way or the other to secure the timely evacuation of our stranded children,” Galadima stated.
“I prayed that may God save our remaining students still in Sudan struggling to come home.” The Nigerian government has really tried.
“It’s not easy to make evacuation, especially at the time of hostilities. between two waring factions in a country like Sudan where the dress code is almost uniform.”
