South Africa advanced into the quarter-finals of AFCON after a disappointing match against Morocco. The game began with few incidents, with Noussair Mazraoui’s drive from outside the box being ruled out for offside.
However, in the second half, Morocco’s Azzedine Ounahi volleyed over the bar, but South Africa’s Evidence Makgopa scored in the 57th minute to give them a shock lead.
Morocco, currently 12th in the FIFA world rankings, had a chance to score when Ayoub El Kaabi’s close-range shot hit Mothobi Mvala’s arm. However, Hakimi’s penalty hit the bar and went over five minutes from time.
Amrabat received a straight red for a foul on Mokoena in the 91st minute. South Africa secured a famous victory with Teboho Mokoena’s 25-yard free-kick in the second half. South Africa will now face Cape Verde in the quarter-finals on February 3, where the winner will face either Angola or Nigeria in the last four.
