Sokoto State Zakkat and Endowment Commission is catering to eighty thousand (80,000) registered orphans.
The Chairman of the Commission, Muhammad Lawal Maidoki disclosed this while kick starting the Date Palm endowment plantation campaign for dead and the living.
He said the commission has in its register 80,000 Orphans and other thousands vulnerable persons who are desperately in need of support.
Maidoki further explained that, the Date Palm plantation exercise is a collaborative partnership between the commission and Al- Yateem Charity Foundation under the leadership of Sheikh Jabir Abubakar Shinkafi.
He said each of the improved variety Date Palm cost the Commission fifty thousand naira (N50,000), adding that it will start yielding fruits in less than five years.
Maidoki advised children to plant Date palm as endowment for their dead parents as a source blessings and rewards while in their graves.
He said parents can also plant Date palm for their new born babies to serve as a source of funding for their education as they grow up.
Sokoto state Government has made available to the commission a five thousand hecters of land to establish a Date Palm only plantation in the state, according to Maidoki.
He said it is our hope to make Sokoto a Date Palm fruits processing and exporting state in Nigeria, adding that already parts of the Date palms planted at the headquarters of the commission have started bearing fruits.
In his remarks, the president of Al-yateem Charity Foundation, Dr. Jabir Abubakar Said his foundation engaged the state Zakkat and endowment commission in the Date Palm endowment plantation to enhance productivity.
He said when the Dates palm started yielding fruits, the commission would harvest and sell them to generate funds for its day to day activities as all as support the orphans under its care.
