Poverty, Hunger Causes of GBV – Sokoto First Lady

Poverty and hunger have been described as the root causes of Gender Based Violence among women.

Wife of Sokoto state Governor Hajiya Mariya Aminu Waziri Tambuwal disclosed this at a One-day Orientation and distribution of economic empowerment support packages and up grants to 120 women GBV survivors amidst Covid – 19 Pandemic.

The Orientation and empowerment program under the auspices of Mariya Tambuwal Development Initiatives has been training women on skills acquisition with a view to reduce over dependence on husbands which some time results in GBV.

Speaking during the orientation exercise, Wife of the Governor, Hajiya Mariya said parents were duty bound to send their children to school, adding that there is nothing in street hawking among Girl child rather than immorality and rape.

“we must to ensure good upbringing of our children and protect the dignity of children and homes” said Hajiya Mariya.

According to her MTDI has been in the forefront of assisting Vulnerable Women in Sokoto state with skills acquisition, working tools and financial grants in the last six years.

The beneficiaries of the one program were drawn across the 23 local Government areas of the state.

During the one-day orientation, beneficiaries were allocated Tailoring machine, Grinding Machine, Goats and financial grants of 20,000 naira depending on individual luck.

Earlier in his address, the UNFPA representative, Mr Umar said his organization would continue to partner with MTDI in the fight against Gender based violence and other form of discrimination among women in the state.

He the UNFPA was fully aware that there was increased GBV cases in homes across the country as a result of lockdown by Government in the wake of Covid – 19 pandemic.

Also speaking the District head of Gagi Sokoto state Alhaji Sani Umar Jabbi commended the effort of the Governors wife Hajiya Mariya in her fight against Gender discriminatory and other social vices against womenfolk.

He said women owned right on how to go about their lives while in their matrimonial homes when it comes to issue of raising children.

The District who is a strong advocate of Women’s right to produce a number children they think they can manage, also appealed to husbands to visit hospitals at the time of pregnancy.
