Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ Special Delegates Conference session sitting in Kano on Thursday passed a new law to supervise the activities of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN).

The special delegates’ conference held at the Afficient event center was presided over by the National President of the Union, Chris Isiguzo.

Amending article 9 of the NUJ Constitution, the delegates resolved for the inclusion of a new clause that states “any SWAN election not supervised by NUJ henceforth is null and void.”

Furthermore, a new clause states that the national president of SWAN should henceforth be addressed as National Chairman.

The session vehemently objected to the proposed draft law that SWAN should now occupy the status of the beat association.

Observers revealed that the resolution passed by the NUJ Special session is considered an infringement on the verdict of courts of competent jurisdiction passed on the issue.

They opined that NUJ had formally written to CAC recommending that the marriage between it and SWAN be dissolved so that the action by NUJ would pave the way for SWAN to be registered as a professional body.

“I ponder how NUJ approved to part ways with SWAN by giving them a letter to go and register with CAC has suddenly turned back and now laying claims to SWAN being an affiliate of NUJ, with SWAN now being a professional body while NUJ is a trade union, which have no business together going by the present positions in the provisions of the law.” an observer stated.
