Future relations between Russia and Niger were the topic of discussion between the two nations’ foreign ministers on Wednesday during their meeting in Moscow.

Sergei Lavrov, the foreign minister of Russia, informed Yusuf Tuggar, the foreign minister of Nigeria, that Nigeria is a top partner for Moscow on the continent.

Tuggar expressed similar thoughts.

“The partnership will keep developing. We believe that we are well-positioned to maintain a robust strategic alliance with Russia “He stated.

In addition, Lavrov declared that Moscow would keep helping the Sahara-Sahel countries improve their capacity for armed conflict.

Political instability has long afflicted the cross-border region, which comprises Mali, Burkina Faso, Chad, Niger, and Guinea.

Jihadist organizations associated with the Islamic State and al-Qaeda have gained strength and clout in the area during the past ten years.

In order to fight the ongoing threats, Lavrov stated, “Russia would assist nations in the region in enhancing the combat capability of their national armed forces, security forces, and law enforcement authorities.”

Russia is making an effort to strengthen its position in the global south even as it deals with criticism over its war in Ukraine. Later this year, in Sochi, there is scheduled to be a summit with the foreign ministers of Africa.
