Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) in Kano trained 50 farmers on best practices in water and soil conservation in accordance with adopted strategies.
Speaking to the participants drawn from 5 local governments of the state at Royal Tropicana Hotel Kano, the state NEWMAP Project Coordinator Malam Musa Shu’aibu revealed that, the training started in December 2019, concluded in June 2020 is aimed at introducing farmers to some adopted farming techniques that will aid in soil as well as water preservation activities by farmers.
He added that participants will also be assisted with fertilizers, improved seeds, water pumping machines and other inputs.
“We started the training six months ago and farmers themselves have begun to testify on the positive changes they have been experiencing after the adoption of the newly introduced techniques. There is also a provision to assist these farmers with some inputs such as water pumps and fertilizer among others,” he said.
While declaring the training open, Kano state Commissioner for environment Dr Kabiru Ibrahim Getso urged the participants to make good use of the knowledge they acquired during the training as well as effective utilization of inputs assistance they received.
The commissioner also advised farmers to ensure strict adherence to the covid-19 prevention and management in cubing the spread of the virus.
