The hand of a three-day-old newborn baby has been damaged due to the alleged negligence of a Doctor at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH).

It was reported that the doctor whose name was not disclosed left a sub-standard tourniquet in the hand of the newborn for over eighteen hours after collecting his blood sample.

The action led to the decay of the right hand of the newborn baby.

The baby was delivered through a cesarean section known as C.S. where the doctor observed he has breath difficulty and admitted him to the pediatric ward.

It was also alleged that for more than eighteen hours no doctor attended to the baby or unravel the tourniquet from his hand until his mother went to breastfeed him.

Later, doctors in the hospital said the hand of the boy must be cut off because blood had not been circulating which caused the damage.

The baby’s father complained that the Hospital maltreated him despite his patience over the incident.

He said that he had been stricken dumb when he was called to buy medicine for his child despite the damage.

He is appealing to concerned authorities to take appropriate action and punish the erring doctor.

A statement issued on Wednesday by Hospital spokesperson, Hauwa Abdullahi said the management condemned the doctor’s negligence and assured that appropriate action would be taken.

According to the statement, the Medical Director, Professor Abdurrahman Abba Sheshe has directed the committee on the negligence of duty to investigate the matter.

The statement further appealed to those with complaints against any Hospital personnel to report to Servicom Desk Officer for necessary action.
