The Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalist (NAWOJ) Jigawa state Chapter, Hajiya Hauwa Ladan has call on all stakeholders and concerned citizens to join hands and support the campaign on “violence against women and girl Child”, these was contained in a statement signed by the Jigawa NAWOJ Secretary Zainab Baba Santali.
Hajiya Hauwa stated that, the raising cases of sexual and verbal assault, domestic violence, women genital mutilation, child trafficking and child slavery, has prompted the need for urgent intervention by the responsible agencies, women activists, decision makers, community associations, and international organizations in every work of life, to shine a light to relieve the pathetic situation of women and girls in terms of safety and well-being.
In a program titled “ORANGE THE WORLD, FUND, RESPOND, PREVENT, COLLECT, by the United Nations in collaboration with the United Nations Women during the 2020 International Day for the Elimination of violence against women’ it was declared that, the campaign on violence against women is a multi-year effort aimed at preventing and eliminating violence against women and girls, will focus on amplifying the call for global action to bridge funding gaps, ensure essential services for survivors of violence during the COVID-19 crisis, focus on prevention, and collection of data that can improve life-saving services for women and girls.
The need for national and global funding to the survivors of this disagreeable act is to assist them to be self-reliant, educate and relieve them from the psychological experience they pass through.
Violence against women has been an obstacle to achieving equality, developmental peace, as well as the fulfillment of women and girls’ human rights.
The secretary added that “As women journalists, we must all use our capacities and mediums to create awareness on the need to break the culture of silence, victimization and stigma. Also portray the dangers behind violence against women and girls.
She said, Investigative journalism is very important to uncover the causes and possible solutions to the menace.
“We pray and hope for a better commitment towards ensuring an end to the violence against women and girl child in Jigawa, Nigeria and the Globe,” added.
