Kano State Government would partner with non – governmental organization “GivFree Africa” in addressing the effects of climate change.

The Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Kabiru Ibrahim Getso made this known during a presentation by the President of Givfree Africa, Alhaji Ibrahim Wala, on effective and efficient tree planting campaign in the State, held at NEWMAP conference hall in the metropolis.

Dr. Getso, said State Governor Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, noted with concern the grave effect of the climate on our environment in the State, stressing the need for general public to complement government effort in addressing the challenges.

He assured that government will joint hand with the organization to plant one million trees in this year and engage communities in ensuring they trees are nurtured and sustained, so as to have a habitable environment.

Speaking, the President, Givfree Africa, Alhaji Ibrahim Garba Wala, said the main focus of the presentation is to create awareness and build environmental workforce in the state such that it would ignite the most effective tree planting exercise.

He identified some of the environmental challenges that led to the climate change in Kano state to include high industrial pollution, scourging heat during hot season, big-sizes ponds and refuse dumping locations are responsible for the high mosquito breeds amongst others.

He, therefore, proposed the idea of converting the ponds that litter the environment into community gardens, orchard and parks to address some of the health and environmental challenges.

“We know that if all of this is put in place in Kano State, then we will surely have a new and fresh environmental atmosphere that will improve the health and wellbeing of the entire people of the State and beyond, also, it will enhance economic growth,” Wala emphasized.
