Kano state ministry of information will work with all development partners to combat the menace of malnutrition in the state.
The state Commissioner of Information, Malam Muhammad Garba stated this during an advocacy meeting with members of Civil Society Scalling- up Nutrition in Nigeria (CS-SUNN) in his office.
The Chief Public Relation Officer, Sani Abba Yola in a statement said the Commissioner, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Usman Bala Muhammad said strategic communication approach would be adopted to help fight the menace of malnutrition.
Usman Bala added that nutrition problems are been ignored because people are more concerned with their physical health challenges and well being despite the fact that malnutrition is causing more damage in Nigeria.
In the statement, the Usman Bala lamented that stunting is systematically destroying the future generation of Kano population and Nigeria in general.
He said the ministry is part of the nutrition action plan and is very much aware that nutrition is multi-sectorial, adding that a budget line for nutrition would be created in the ministry.
The Permanent Secretary assured them that the ministry will assign a desk officer for nutrition communication for monitoring and analysing the situation with a view to achieving the desired objectives.
Earlier, chairman, National Steering Committee Civil Society Scalling-up Nutrition in Nigeria, Mr. Innocent Ekene stated that records indicate that 37 per cent of children in Kano are suffering from stunting which is dangerous to our social and economic growth.
The Chairman appealed to the ministry of information to initiate a sensitization campaign through mass media to enlighten the people of Kano especially those living in rural areas about the importance of good nutrition that can be found in our local foods.
