Kano Commits to Passage of Draft Education Policies into Law

Kano State Commissioner of Education, Alh Sunusi Saidu Kiru (Majidadin Kiru) has promised to facilitate the passage of draft education polices into law, provide Girl Education Budgetary allocation and timely releases of funds to the sector.

He made the statement when the Citizens’ Group wing of the Girls Education Partnership facilitated by PERL-FCDO recently paid him a courtesy visit in his office.

PERL or Partnership to Engage, Reform, and Learn is a public-sector accountability and governance program, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office of the UK– FCDO.

The Commissioner of Education appreciated the citizens’ group for their selfless and proactive commitments towards uplifting Girl Education status in Kano.

He assured that the Ministry will establish a Unit for Girls Education Support and also a Budgetary allocation to Education in 2022 will receive a boost by capturing the Citizens’ Group demand into the Ministry’s Budgetary allocation.  

Kiru noted that the present administration has done a lot on Girls Education especially during the implementation of 2021 Budget, through establishment of Girls Science secondary school in Ganduje, procured a school and named it after the First Lady, Prof. Hafsat Ganduje at Jaoji Quarters, Tarauni LGA

“The facilities at the First Lady College were upgraded and implemented many other projects worth millions of Naira to support the Girls Education in the state,” he added.

He advised the citizens’ group to furnish his office with the draft education policies for re-introduction to the State Executive Council for approval.

The Majidadin Kiru also directed the group to come up with a viable proposal for training requirements for possible support and implementation.

Earlier in her remarks, the leader of the delegation, Hajia Mairo Bello said the group was at his office to “say thank you for your support and inaugurating the partnership,” make requests and present observations for intervention.

She said: “There is need to facilitate the passage of the drafted policies supported by PERL on “Girls Child Policy 2016” and “Teacher Policy 2017” to fast track the Girl child education development.

“There should be financial backing for approved budget because presently, the state budget performance shows little releases to the Education sector.

“We are advocating for the creation of more Schools for Girls in the state because of the population of Girls, this should be captured in the 2022 budget,” she said.

On the training of the newly deployed teachers, Hajia Mairo called for separate training for female teachers with emphasis on female hygiene.

She said female teachers among the deployed teachers should be posted to Girls Schools’ and be considered to be part of management in positions such as Principals, Vice Principals, Senior Masters and Guidance and Counselling mistress.

The group presented to the Hon. Commissioner a document it prepared on 2021 Education Sector Budgetary Analysis and observations as a key objective of their visit.  

Present at the meeting which was held in the Commissioner’s Chamber were Directors, Sector heads, traditional leaders and members of the Citizens’ Group.
