Harry Kane continued his red-hot start to life at Bayern Munich with a first-half brace as the defending champions overcame Heidenheim 4-2 to move top of the Bundesliga.

The England captain, 30, opened the scoring 14 minutes when swivelling and lashing into the top corner, before heading home Leroy Sane’s corner a minute before half-time.

The game appeared sewn up at that point but two quickfire goals after the break from Tim Kleindienst and Jan-Niklas Beste saw Frank Schmidt’s visitors mount an unlikely turnaround.

However, substitute Raphael Guerreiro reinstated the hosts’ lead before Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting secured all three points for Bayern in the 85th minute.

Kane’s impressive showing brought his Bundesliga tally to an unprecedented 17 goals in his opening 11 outings, beating Robert Lewandowski’s previous record of 16 at the same stage.

After the match, the No9 remained humble when asked whether he would be able to surpass his Polish predecessor’s league record of 41 goals in a single season.

He said: “It’s a little bit too far away yet.

“I’m sure you guys will bring it up every time I score. I just need to be focused game by game.

“If we’re close in April, then I’m sure it’ll be something I’ll try and reach.”

Remarkably, Kane has already surpassed last season’s Bundesliga joint-top scorers of Christopher Nkunku and Niclas Fullkrug, who both ended the campaign with 16 goals each.

The Bavarians now lead the league by a point, although Bayer Leverkusen can reclaim the top spot with victory on Sunday when they face Union Berlin.
