The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) has decided to suspend its more than two-month industrial action, effective from Monday.
The Judiciary workers took the decision at their National Executive Council (NEC) meeting which ended on Wednesday evening.
The National Judicial Council (NJC) had, at a meeting with JUSUN leaders on Tuesday, with the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Ibrahim Muhammad in attendance, urged the striking court workers to put an end to the industrial action in the interest of the country and the suffering court users.
Top on the list of JUSUN’s demands is the issue of financial autonomy to the judiciary. They are also demanding the payment of peculiar allowances to their members.
JUSUN had since April 6, 2021, locked courts in Nigeria because of the non-implementation of financial autonomy for the judiciary as the third arm of government.
The union had challenged the Federal and State governments who have over the years declined to grant financial autonomy to the judiciary.
