Headlining the live SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Calif., in a Premier Boxing Champions event is the undefeated Interim WBA Super Featherweight Champion Chris “Primetime” Colbert who will be facing hard-hitting contender Tugstsogt “King Tug” Nyambayar on Saturday, July 3.
Chris Colbert is only 22 yet has already lived a full life. The southpaw featherweight who survived a turbulent upbringing in Brooklyn, New York, was supposed to fight Yuriorkis Gamboa, but an injured rib put the kibosh on that idea.
Nyambayar stepped up on short notice and jumped up a weight category to take this fight. Tugstsogt Nyambayar is a former WBC featherweight world title challenger and also a former Olympian. He is a stiffer test for Colbert than Gamboa was as he is ten years younger and has much more tread on the proverbial tires.
With the interim belt in his possession, a strong win here could vault Colbert towards fighting the WBA’s undisputed champion in that weight class, Gervonta Davis.
Despite his not so lustre stoppage rate, Colbert still has a myriad of tools in his proverbial toolbox. He has dizzying speed and skill, as well as a multifaceted, exciting combatant to watched.
I see the outcome of this one being determined by the judges. Ultimately, I think Nyambayar is a supremely talented fighter. But one who has shown certain holes in his last pair of fights that I foresee Colbert being able to exploit. For those that want to bet: it is a Colbert wins!
A co-main event of the July 3 fight is the unbeaten rising lightweight contender Michel Rivera against Jon Fernández. Rivera knows that with opportunities like Saturday, combined with his skills, that he is on the track he has long hoped for.
No Limit Boxing have confirmed that Michael Zerafa has officially pulled out of the anticipated July 7 fight between him vs Tim Tszyu. However, No Limit Boxing still confirmed that the hottest prospect in Australian boxing, Steve Spark, has agreed to take the fight on a week’s notice.
Spark (12-1; 11 KO) who put in a statement performance against former Tim Tszyu rival Jack Brubaker to win convincingly over the number one ranked Australian welterweight accepted to take the fight on a short notice. Tim Tszyu was quick to thank Spark for taking the fight at short notice and knows it’s a dangerous fight.
