Harry Kane scored his first four hat-tricks in his debut Bundesliga season, helping Bayern Munich reduce Bayer Leverkusen’s lead to seven points.
The team responded with an emphatic win against relegation-threatened Mainz, bringing their tally to 30 goals in 25 Bundesliga games. Kane also provided a wonderful assist for Jamal Musiala.
Bayern are aiming for a record-extending 12th successive title, but their tight grip on the Bundesliga is under threat from Leverkusen. Bayern manager Thomas Tuchel assured his side that they would continue to make “statements of intent” and that they would not give up hope.
Mainz reduced the gap through Nadiem Amiri, but Kane scored again before halftime. Thomas Muller scored the fourth goal in similar fashion to Kane’s opener, and Musiala was the creator with a low cross from the left.
Kane broke quickly and picked out Musiala with a superb cross-field pass, while Serge Gnabry flicked in a sixth goal. Kane completed his hat-trick with his 40th goal for club and country this season, with Goretzka adding an eighth in injury time.
