Getso Lauds NEWMAP Over Tree Conservation

Kano State Commissioner of Environment, Dr. Kabiru Ibrahim Getso, has lauded the efforts of the Kano State Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (Kano-NEWMAP) towards conserving the vulnerable indigenous tree species.

Maryam Abdulqadir, the Communication Officer, Kano-NEWMAP, in a statement said the Commissioner made the commendation in an interview with journalists shortly after visiting some of the project sites, where he was conducted round by the State Project Coordinator (SPC) Alhaji Musa Shuaibu.

Dr. Getso was impressed by most of the places visited, urging them to continue in the same track as it will help address environmental challenges like climate change, erosion, desertification and other forms of land degradation.

The Commissioner particularly hailed the project for displaying wisdom through establishing a botanical garden, where it identifies and nurtures different types of indigenous trees that are considered prone to extinction.

He emphasized on the essence of documentation and dissemination of the project activities for the attention of stakeholders at all levels and donor agencies that advocates for environmental conservation.

In the course of the tour, the Commissioner inspected some activities of the project comprising the established avenue plantings at Koguna, Maitsidau and Chidari; Mahogany conservation site at Mahuwa, Fuel wood plantation at Kumbo, Gumawa and natural regeneration at Dawan-Adam.
