The Nigeria Army says the Command Science Secondary Schools in north west states of Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Kaduna, and Kastina may soon collapse because the governors are yet to signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the military to take over their funding.
The Commander Education Corp, Major General Muhammed Augie made the remark while briefing Kebbi State Governor during his assessment tour of the Command Science Secondary, School (Boys) Jega and Command Girls Science Secondary School, Sabon Garin Goru in Birnin Kebbi.
He said there is urgent need for the state governors in the north west to sign the MoU because the Army may review their viability.
The Education Commander also said he had already undertaken assessment tour to Kaduna, Sokoto and Zamfara states in the north west where the military schools are established.
“Now I came to Kebbi to see what is on ground, And I don’t see the military establishing these type of schools again anywhere in the country. Let us not see to the collapse of these ones,” he warns.
“Except the MoU are signed, the military cannot provide the funds and they remain the state schools until state governments do everything needed.” he added.
He however said feeding in these schools has risen from N500 to N1000 per students and because of that parents have been withdrawing their children from the schools.
He therefore called on the state governors to as a matter of urgency signed the MoU to save the schools from collapsing.
In his response, the Deputy Governor who represented Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu assured the army that the state is committed to the sustainability of the army command science schools in the state.
He said “I can assure you that those in charge of the schools are capable and the governor will sign the MoU soon for the smooth running of the two command science schools in Kebbi State.”
