The Resource Center for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) have agreed to partner toward promoting community-driven anti-corruption initiatives in Kano.

Both organizations on Tuesday agreed to the partnership during an advocacy visit to ICPC.

In his advocacy remarks, Omoniyi Adeoye, the Senior Programs Officer at CHRICED appreciated ICPC’s support to the center in their fight against corrupt practices, especially concerning the conduct of constituency projects in the state.

He emphasized ICPC’s impact on the success of their MacArthur Funded Project tagged “Promotion of Community-Driven Anti-Corruption Initiatives in Kano State” which elapsed in 2023.

Adeoye announced that the successes recorded in the previous years promoted an extension of the project to 2024.

According to him, CHRICED is soliciting the support of ICPC in the next phase of its project.

He said: “As an outcome of our previous engagement with community members on tracking constituency projects, they have yearned for training on how to write petitions against lawmakers who carry out illegalities in the conduct of constituency projects in their localities.

“We are optimistic that the ICPC will continue supporting us, as we promote anti-corruption initiatives in Kano state.”

Responding, the Chairman of ICPC in Kano, Ibrahim Garba, said the anti-graft agency is ever ready to support CHRICED in its fight against corruption in Kano, especially in constituency projects.

“If corrupt practices are not stopped, the society may move forward.

“The commonwealth of the people will be siphoned by a few, while the grassroots suffer the consequences.

“Constituency Projects must be community-driven but what we see today is that a few people in positions of power nominate projects that are often not the people’s priority.

“Sadly, these projects are mostly abandoned, not carried out to specification, or even not carried out.

“We will work together and continue to pressure fraudulent lawmakers to restore sanity in the system.”
