Cholera Outbreak: Yankwashi LG Commence Rehabilitation of Over 200 Hands Pumps

Yankwashi Local Government Council of Jigawa has embarked on massive rehabilitation of hand pumps to improve access to clean drinking water in rural areas.

The Chairman of the Council, Hon Mubarak Ahmad Acilafiya revealed this while briefing newsmen on the measures taken by the council to improve water supply in the area.

He explained that the council has purchased spare parts worth millions of Naira to ensure all the broken hand pumps across the council area are fixed in collaboration with communities.

The Chairman added that the massive rehabilitation is aimed at enhancing water supply in rural areas to tackle cholera and other waterborne diseases.

“With the provision of accessible drinking water personal and environmental hygiene will improve while many diseases that kill our children, pregnant women, and other victims can be tackled” the chairman declared.

The chairman however revealed that the council has also commenced payment of N10,000 as pocket money to all indigenes of the local government studying in various higher institutions.

He said the money given to the students is aims at assisting them to cope with the current economic hardship in the country.

Hon Mubarak then reiterated the commitment of his councils to do everything possible to encourage children in the area to go to school particularly girls.

It can be recalled that over 100 people were confirmed died. as a result of the cholera outbreak in Jigawa state last year.
