Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have announced their withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), a decision that has sparked various reactions, particularly following the Niger coup in July.

Burkina Faso’s Prime Minister, Apollinaire Joachim Kyélem de Tambèla, justified the decision in Ouagadougou, stating that ECOWAS no longer meets the aspirations of the Sahelian peoples, making the AES alliance necessary.

He criticised ECOWAS sanctions against his country, Mali, and Niger, and accused the bloc of failing to assist its member states. Kyélem de Tambèla cited ECOWAS’s indiference in the face of massacres, humanitarian crises, and destabilization attempts.

Burkina Faso has informed the 15-nation bloc of its decision and has called on its populations to mobilize in support of the move.
