In an effort to help Sudan, France announced on Wednesday that it will hold a humanitarian conference in April amidst the ongoing conflict between military rivals there.

The goal of the Paris meeting, according to French Foreign Minister Stephane Sejourne, is to assist in resolving the “dramatic humanitarian catastrophe” that is affecting Sudan and its neighbors.

He gave no further information regarding the conference.

The conflict that erupted in April of last year between Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, the leader of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, and Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the head of Sudan’s army, claimed thousands of lives.

Due to the war, 6.1 million people have been forced from their homes, and 1.6 million Sudanese have fled abroad, many of them to neighboring Egypt and Chad.

More than half of Sudan’s population, or around 25 million people, according to the UN, are in need of assistance, with almost 18 million of them suffering from severe food insecurity.
