Sokoto State Commissioner of Police, CP Useni Mohammed Gumel, and the State Director of Security (SDS) have strongly disassociated themselves from the viral video currently in circulation in the social media allegedly released by media handles of the former Governor Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa.
In a statement signed by the spokesperson of the Sokoto Police Command, DSP Sanusi Abubakar and made available to journalists said the viral video portrayed that former Governor Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko (Sarkin Yamma) refused to sign a peace accord which the security is currently working on.
According to the statement, the peace accord was aimed at sanitizing the state of the disturbing trend of Political thuggery ahead of the forthcoming gubernatorial elections in the state.
“For the avoidance of doubt members of the public should note that the initiative which is aimed to make a consultation with the Elder Statesmen is expected to be led by the State Executive Governor, Aminu Waziru Tambuwal, Matawallen Sokoto.
“It’s a call for the highly respected statement to come together, put aside their political differences, and come up with a statement for the state broadcast that all political parties supporters can listen to and make them embrace peace for the good of the greater number of Sokoto residents and not otherwise as claimed in the viral audio”.
The statement which was jointly issued by both the commissioner of Police and the Director of the State Security Service advised the two elder statesmen to settle their grievances without distortion the mission of the ongoing consultation built in good faith.
The statement warned political sectors to desist from the portrayal of the good image of the two security chiefs along political lines.
The Police in the statement recalled that on the 3rd of March, 2023, the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police launched an Operation against Political thuggery code named: (Kule Chass)
The two security chiefs afterward resolved to contact the elder statesmen on the need to cooperate and prevail on their supporters and all other residents to understand that the Operation is to keep the state safe, work with the stakeholders and gather momentum for better ways of providing security for the forthcoming Gubernatorial and supplementary elections.
“It’s most unfortunate that this viral audio now on circulation purportedly released by the media handlers of the former Governor His Excellency, Dr. Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa is trying to derail the peace process”.
“In view of the foregoing, the Command wishes to make it categorically clear that the Commissioner of Police and State Director of Security are not politicians but members of the state peace and security council.”
The statement further stated it’s a call to all political players to always when settling their grievances not involve the CP and SDS in their political issues in a similar way they have been misquoted in the viral audio.
