A Spanish tourist was killed by an elephant in a South African wildlife reserve after he got out of his car and went up to a herd to snap pictures, according to reports on Tuesday from the police and local administration.

Sunday's death of the 43-year-old man occurred in North West Province's Pilanesberg National Park, some 180 kilometers (111 miles) away from Johannesburg, according to police.

There were young calves in the elephant herd. Experts in wildlife warnings frequently caution that elephants might respond violently to perceived threats and are particularly protective of their young.

According to the police, the man's fiance and two other unhurt women from Johannesburg were also in the car.

Visitors to Pilanesberg are informed that they are not permitted to abandon their cars while driving through the park and are required to sign documents attesting to their understanding of the regulations, according to Piet Nel, acting chief conservation officer for the North West Parks and Tourism Board.

According to Nel, "people are sometimes unaware of the dangers in the parks." "Remember that you are going into a dangerous area."

Two American visitors were killed by elephants in Zambia, a country in the southern region of Africa, this year in two different assaults.
