Population growth is half-mast in Egypt. The rate decreased to 1.4% in 2023, the lowest level in decades, as per data released on Thursday by the Ministry of Planning.

With 106 million people, Egypt is the most populated nation in the Arab world, according to the official Egyptian statistics office.

For the government, the population decline is excellent news. Presidency leader Abdel Fattah al-Sisi had already issued a warning over the impact of the birth rate on state finances and services.

At a time when sixty percent of people are living on or close to the poverty line. In addition, the nation lacks enough hospitals and educational facilities, among other facilities. Furthermore, it is collapsing under the force of a growing debt.

The authorities started the 2019 campaign “Deux, c’est assez” in an attempt to counteract the demographic shift (two is enough).
