The Dutse Emirate Development Association (DEDA) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of a Nigerian Army officer, Lieutenant Colonel Faruk Umar Usman, who was killed while fighting insurgents in Borno State.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the association’s Public Relations Officer II, Muhammad Musbahu Basirka, DEDA said the officer, who hailed from Birnin Kudu in Jigawa State, died in the line of duty during ongoing counter-terrorism operations against insurgent groups operating in the North-East, including Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

DEDA described the late officer as a courageous and dedicated soldier whose service to the nation earned him the admiration of both civilians and fellow military personnel.

According to the association, Lt. Col. Usman was widely respected for his discipline, compassion and bravery, qualities that distinguished him in several military operations aimed at protecting communities from terrorist attacks.

Residents across parts of the North-East had reportedly commended his efforts in defending vulnerable communities from repeated insurgent assaults.

The association noted that many people saw him not only as a military commander but also as a symbol of hope and security during the height of insurgency threats in the region.

“His leadership and bravery made him a game changer in several operations and an inspiration to many soldiers serving on the frontlines,” the statement said.

Beyond his military responsibilities, the late officer was also recognised for his humanitarian contributions, often using his personal resources to support displaced civilians and assist colleagues in need.

DEDA said his humility, generosity and commitment to helping the less privileged earned him widespread respect wherever he served.

The association described his death during the holy month of Ramadan as a profound sacrifice in service to the nation and humanity.

DEDA extended condolences to the family of the deceased officer, the Defence Headquarters, the Government and people of Jigawa State under Governor Umar Namadi, the people of Birnin Kudu, and the Muslim community.

It also called on the Jigawa State Government to honour and immortalise Lt. Col. Usman in recognition of his service and sacrifice to the state and the country.
