To support the campaign against environmental degradation and climate change, a Non-governmental Organization (PADAC Foundation) has launched community sensitization on waste management and using environmentally friendly energy in Hadejia Local Government of Jigawa state.

The NGO organized the community engagement under its project Agro Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscape (ACReSAL).

Speaking at the one-day community engagement the Executive Director of PADAC Foundation, Hajiya Aisha Aminu explained that the ACReSAL project is a critical step towards ensuring sustainable environmental development.

She explained that engaging the community is aimed at mobilizing the general public to understand the menace of environmental degradation and climate change, as well as the role everyone is expected to play in mitigating the challenge for a safe environment.

“The project is designed to promote the adoption of eco-friendly waste management techniques and empower local communities to address waste management challenges effectively and raise awareness about the adverse effects of improper waste disposal and other environmentally harmful practices.

“We chose Hadejia Community for launching the program because in the past decades, Hadejia has experienced rapid urbanization and population growth, resulting in increased waste generation. Improper waste disposal led to issues such as perennial flooding, environmental pollution, the spread of diseases, and other related environmental degradation challenges.

“To ensure the project’s success, PADAC Foundation has formed Waste Management Community Interest Groups comprising passionate and dedicated individuals from different communities who will also serve as catalysts for change and support the project’s activities at the grassroots level” she declared.

In his remark on the occasion, the chief Imam of Hadejia Mal. Yusuf Abdul Rahman who was represented by his deputy said the initiative is in line with Islamic teaching which says ‘cleanliness is part of our Faith.’

He then assured the religious leaders of support in promoting environmental hygiene and all other practices that will help in ecological improvement.

Also speaking, the district head of Hadejia, Atafi Alhaji Haruna Bashir who commended the effort of the PADAC foundation, urged the participants to step down the message to their respective communities.

On his part, a participant, Alhaji Tijjani Dodo thanked the organizers and pledged to do the needful.

During the sensitization meeting and awareness sessions with the residents, various topics including waste segregation, recycling, composting, afforestation, and the importance of environmental hygiene for community health, were discussed.
