The Kano State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development has inaugurated a strategic knowledge management technical working committee on Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
The committee was inaugurated by the Commissioner of Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr. Zahra’u Muhammad Umar at an event held at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH).
Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Sa’adatu Sai’d Bala charged members of the committee to work tirelessly to mitigate GBV due to the increasing number of cases being recorded in the state.
The Commissioner advised the Committee to pay attention to other cases of gender-based abuses ranging from sexual exploitation, harassment, and other challenges across the state.
Dr. Zahra’u pointed out that, members of the committee were carefully selected based on their knowledge and experiences as partners supporting policies and programs aimed at uplifting the standard of living among Kano residents.
Malam Yakubu Muhammad, Director of Planning, Research, and Statistics, Kano State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development presented a paper on how to report the GBV Data.
The second paper was presented by a development partner, George-town Global Health, Nigeria.
The GBV Committee has SMWA as Chairperson, Ministry of Health, Member, Ministry of Education, Member, Ministry of Justice, Member, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Member, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Member, Kano State Social Welfare, Member, the Humanitarian Ministry, Member.
Others are the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Member, the Nigerian Police, Member, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Member, National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Member, State, and Local Agencies for the Control of AIDS (SACA), Member, the Correctional Service, Member, Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC), Member, CSOs/NGOs/SPs/IPs, Member, Religious Bodies, Member, Traditional Institutions, Member, and others to serve as Member.
The Director of Planning, Research, and Statistics of the Ministry will serve as Secretary with Zubairu Abdulmuminu as Assistant Secretary.
