The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has directed the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), in charge of Sokoto State, Dr. Nura Ali to stay away from the Commission and replaced him with the Administrative Secretary of the state, Hauwa Aliyu Kangiwa with immediate effect until further notice.
This was contained in a letter addressed to the Sokoto INEC Office dated 6th March 2023 and signed by the Secretary to the Commission, Rose Oriaran-Anthony.
The letter read; “This is to inform you of the Commission’s decision for you (Dr. Nura Ali) Resident Electoral Commissioner, Sokoto State to stay away from the Commission’s office in Sokoto state with immediate effect until further notice. The Administrative Secretary of the state, Hauwa Aliyu Kangiwa with immediate effect.”
A separate letter signed by the Commission Secretary read in part; “The Commission has approved for you, Hauwa Aliyu Kangiwa (Administrative Secretary, INEC Sokoto state) to take full charge of the Commission’s in the state with immediate effect.”
The letter further directed the Administrative Secretary to liaise with the Supervisory National Commissioner, Professor Muhammad Sani Kaita for further clarifications when necessary.
“Note that the Nationa Commissioner, (Major General AB Alkali) and four senior officials (names attached) are deployed to your state to assist you in the preparations and conduct the forthcoming Governorship and state House of Assembly Elections.”
