CS-CRIN Trains Kano Sports Writers, Signs MoU with SWIBODA

Civil Society Organization for Conflict Resolution in Nigeria (CS-CRIN), Sports Without Borders Association (SWIBODA), and Sports Writers Association (WSAN) Kano State Chapter organized a one-day Capacity Building Training on Peacebuilding and Conflict Management through Sports Journalism for its members in Kano.

The activity which was funded by the European Union and British Council aims to train Nigerian Sports Writers and journalists to effectively use sports as a tool for conflict resolution.

Participants were taught diverse topics ranging from the causes of conflict and the relationship between peacebuilding, conflict management, and sports in Nigeria.

At the training, a seasoned sports writer Mr. Abdulgaffar Oladimeji challenge the journalists to go back to their various local communities and organize themselves as a group to benefit from various European Union grants as sports is an important tool for the community development.

One common point the facilitator Mr. Adeniyi Aremu made is that journalists need more connectors than dividers in conflict resolution, which sports are one of the most important tools in peacebuilding, not only in Nigeria but the world at large.

Participants include the Deputy Zonal Chairman of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria North West Zone, Alh. Rilwan Idris Malikawa Garu.

The activity was rounded up with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the CS-CRIN and SWIBODA with the following terms;

  1. Organize and facilitate training workshops in collaboration with SWAN.
  2. Create Media Visibility for European Union project activities.
  3. Organize Nobility Football match between media organizations and Civil Society Organizations in Kano State.
  4. Source and Solicit for Funds, Land, and Sporting Equipment for the building of sporting facilities for people living with disability in Kano State.

At the end of the training, participants were issued certificates.

The participants appreciated the organizers of the workshop.
