Kogi – The Executive Secretary, Kogi State Office for Disability Affairs (KOSODA), Barr. Zacchaeus Dare Michael has appealed to Governor Yahaya Bello to declare free education for school-age children with disabilities at all levels in the spirit of Eid-el-Kabir.

The Executive Secretary (ES) KOSODA who made the appeal in a statement on Sunday said the appeal is in line with the Universal Basic Education Policy for Persons with Disabilities (PwD).

It is also in line with Nigeria’s National Policy on Education which says children with special needs should have free education at all levels, he added.

According to him, declaring free education would reduce exclusion, pointing out that exclusion limits PwD from gaining access to health facilities.

He said: “The need to enhance special schools in the state has become necessary as it would make parents of children with special needs to enroll their wards in school to reduce street begging and the number of out-of-school children in the state.

He noted that exclusion of PWD affects 10% of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product.

The ES also said with education, the self-worth and dignity of PwD would be enhanced.

He then urged Gov. Bello to in this season declare free education as Sallah gift for school-age children with disabilities in the state.

While pointing out that Gov. Yahaya Bello remains the icon of PwD, he said no administration in Nigeria and Kogi State has equaled the support Persons with Disability are presently enjoying in the state.
