The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Sokoto Area Command has dispatched reinforcement of armed officers and men to douse escalating tension in Asara Village Sokoto following a clash between the Asara community and men of the Nigeria customs at a checkpoint in the area.
On Sunday the 2nd of January officers of the Nigeria Customs Service, Sokoto/Zamfara Command mobile Team ‘A’ based on credible intelligence that some contraband goods were about to be smuggled into the country, mounted a stop and search operation at Asara village along Sokoto Illela Road.
According to a statement signed by public relations officer of the area command Tahir Balarabe Yusuf and made available to journalists in Sokoto stated that at about 8 am Sunday, a Toyota brand Avensis vehicle with tinted glass believed to be conveying the smuggled goods was flagged down for search but the driver upon sighting officers tried to escape and in the process almost knock down one of the officers who quickly jumped out of his way, but unfortunately, the vehicle ran into an oncoming commercial vehicle which led to a head-on collision resulting in the death of one passenger and others sustained injuries and were taken to Gwadabawa Hospital for treatment.
According to the release, some unscrupulous elements who disguised as sympathizers mobbed officers at the checkpoint and in the process set one Patrol vehicle and a private vehicle belonging to one of the officers ablaze.
The Comptroller of customs Sokoto area command, Abdulhameed Ma’aji in his effort to contain the situation from further escalation sent a reinforcement team that succeeded in restoring law and order in the area.
The Area Comptroller while sympathizing with the victims of the accident, appealed to the Public to always support the Service in its effort to block contraband goods from coming into the country through the borders.
