Super Eagles need change of mentality to succeed in Cameroon – Aghahowa

Ex-international, Julius Aghahowa has declared that for the Super Eagles to succeed at AFCON 2022 in Cameroon they must have a change of mentality in their approach to the games.

Aghahowa, who spoke at the weekend with TNSports at the National Stadium in Lagos regretted that the Super Eagles have been too passive in their approach to games under sacked Gernot Rohr, hence they lacked the fighting spirit the Super Eagles of the past are noted for.

He believes that with the return of Augustine Eguavoen as the new Super Eagles coach following the sacking of Rohr, that attitude could change for good, noting that the present crop of players in the team has the potentials to succeed if given the right preparation and confidence.

Super Eagles are in Group D alongside Egypt, Sudan and Guinea-Bissau with the best two teams at the end of the group matches gaining automatic progression into the knockout stage.

“I think that the crop of players we’ve now, they are battle-ready, but we just need to tone their psychology a little bit and with the appointment of Eguavoen, I think he would be able to do that.

“He has played that game to the highest level, and he has also been there as a coach under a foreign technical adviser and also has coached the Eagles in the past. So, I think he has the technical ability to take these players to the next level,” he said.

“You know most of these players we’ve were not raised here; they grew up abroad so that mentality of never giving up of Nigerians is not with them. We need to put it in them and that is why I prefer to have a Nigerian coach who had played the game to the highest level to be in charge of them so that he can put it into them.

“They need that mentality to be successful in Cameroon,” the former Shakhtar Donetsk of Ukraine and Wigan Athletic of England player added.
