Jigawa Education Partnership Says Socio-cultural Barriers Hinder Girl Education

Jigawa Education Partnership identifies street hawking, early marriage, poverty and misconception on western education among the socio-cultural barriers hindering the education of girl-child education in Jigawa state.

This was a collective stand of different citizens group during a one-day town hall meeting organized by Partnership to Engage Reform and Learn (PERL-FCDO) with the aim of finding solution to the challenges of girl child education across the state.

The event also seeks to explore, understand and document barriers that hinders girl child access to education, retention, transition and completion.  

During the meeting, stakeholders believe that all hands must be on deck in order address problems bedeviling girl education especially in the rural areas.

The PERL, Jigawa facilitator, Hajiya Hajara Suleiman said the purpose of this meeting is to generate the input of citizens from the community, document issues hindering girl child education at the community level.

She said PERL is working in three pilot local government areas from three senatorial districts.  

Hajara said girls in communities selected are facing challenges of enrolment, retention, transition, and completing their education.

“I commend the level of local government members commitments especially the women that made the presentation on the issues hindering girl child education in their areas,” she added.

Stallion Times reports that the meeting had in attendance members of the various ministries department and agencies, state education partners which includes civil society organizations and citizens group from different communities.
