Malaria Consortium Commences Distribution of 3.7m Insect Treated Nets in Jigawa

In a continues effort to roll back Malaria disease in Nigeria, Malaria Consortium in collaboration with other donor agencies has flagged off the distribution of over 3.7 million Insect Treated Nets in Jigawa state.

Speaking at the event at Madobi town, Dutse local government of the state, Governor Alhaji Muhammad Badaru Abubakar expressed his delight for the intervention which he described as a timely.

He said the distribution of the Long-Lasting Treated Insect Nets will help in addressing the menace of Malaria disease which is one of the major prevailing diseases contributing to the higher rate of maternal and child mortality in the state.

The Governor who was represented by his Deputy, Malam Umar Namadi noted that, the state government is doing everything possible to strengthen the state health sector and in line with this, 16% of the state 2022 budget was allocated to health sector.

He however expressed the preparedness of the state government to partner with civil societies, community leaders, donor agencies and other partners to promote effective public healthcare service delivery.

The governor than assured the Jigawa state people that, the Insect Treated Net is effective and safe for human life there they should use it in accordance to the guideline.

In her speech, the National Coordinator of National Malaria Elimination Program (NMEP) Mrs Mary Esama said as a result of combine effort toward roll back Malaria in Nigeria, the prevalence of the disease has reduced from 42% in 2010 to 20% according to 2018 National Data Survey.

She than called on all stakeholders in Jigawa state to join hands in the campaign to promote the use of the Nets among people to checkmate the menace of Malaria disease in the society.

In her speech, the Senior Vector Control Manager, Catholic Relief Agencies, Mrs Orezi Nicholas Adhekoyibo said, they accessed funds from Global Funds and purchased the Mosquito Nets for onward distribution to the beneficiaries in Jigawa state and other states of the federation.

She however revealed that, the CRS is also partnering with Malaria consortium, state government and other key partners for the successful distribution of the Nets.

Mrs Orezi added that, measure has been taken to ensure compliance with Covid-19 preventive measure in the cause of the distribution exercise
