Gunmen believed to be Bandits attacked Mailalle weakly market and open fire killing 20 people and injuring unspecified number of traders, some with bullets wounds and macheted cuts.
The attack which was the second in the area saw gunmen carting away foodstuffs and setting houses and cars ablaze.
The attackers also took over the control of the only petrol station in the area and siphoned litres of petrol for their motorcycles and jerricans.
Confirming the attack, a former Commissioner and resident of the area Alhaji Jelani Danbuga, said the attackers numbering about 200 hundred stormed the weekly market on motorbikes and started shooting sporadically to scare traders and motorists.
He said in the process many traders and buyers were killed while others sustained injuries women and children inclusive.
Danbuga further said, the gunmen took advantage of mobile telecommunication shutdown in the eastern of the state to carry out their ungodly act without challenge from any security operative.
Many people believed that the attack was a reprisal from the recent happening on Thursday in Mammande Village of Gwadabawa local government area where more than 10 Fulani herders
were killed by suspected self acclaimed vigilantes in a similar weekly market last Thursday.
The eastern part of Sokoto bordering Zamfara state has become a battle ground for bandits, security operatives and government recognized vigilante groups.
Mother than 700 people were estimated to have killed since when cattle rustling and banditry came into being in the area sometimes in June 2019.
