Gunmen Intercept SSTA Vehicle on Sokoto Gusau Road, Abduct Passengers

General Manager, Sokoto State Transport Authority (SSTA), Yahuza Abubakar Chika has confirmed the interception of its vehicle by gunmen on Sunday along Sokoto/Talata Mafara road.

The Gunmen who were believed to be bandits barricaded the road in the early hours of the day and whisked away unspecified number of passengers travelling to Kano.

According to the General Manager, the driver and conductor were said to have escaped from the vehicle before it finally came under attacked.

He said the transport agency is still compiling the manifesto of passengers with a view to have exact number of passengers in the vehicle when it took off from the terminal.

Yahuza however said it is the first-time vehicles of the SSTA came under attacked by gunmen or bandits along the busy higher way since when they started operation over 25 years ago.

Bandits and other criminal gangs have been conducting their nefarious activities without much challenge from the security along the once busy Sokoto, Gusau road.

Passengers plying the road have been in constant fear of the known whenever they were about to set a journey to Kano, Katsina, Gusau, Kaduna or Abuja. Some passengers even take pains to pass through Niger and Kebbi state before coming to Sokoto.

Speaking to Stallion Times reporter, a strong member of the NURTW Bello Mai Laya said lots of their members of the association in Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara have lost their lives as a result of wanton activities of gunmen along the higher way.

He said he is afraid if care is not taken, they would have left with no option than to go on strike and take off their vehicles from the road.

According to him, even last week Sunday, gunmen took over the around 4pm shooting sporadically on any vehicle plying road the action which forced to converge at Lambar Tureta on the Sokoto axis and Talata mafara from the Zamfara axis not until Army came to provide escort.

At the time of filling this report, all efforts via telephone to reach the spokesperson, Sokoto State Command, ASP Sanusi Abubakar was not successful.
