NUJ Commiserates with SOSG, Victims of Sokoto Market Fire Disaster

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Sokoto State Council has commiserated with the Sokoto state government and the victims of the central market inferno.

According to a press statement made available to newsmen by the secretary of the council, Malam Abubakar Imam, the market was gutted by fire at late hours of Tuesday morning.

The council in the statement, while describing the disaster as a great loss being it as the most valuable asset to the people of the state, commended the timely intervention of the Sokoto state government.

It specifically applauded Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal for setting up a committee under the leadership of his deputy, Mannir Muhammad Dan’iya to ascertain the remote cause of the inferno and assess the magnitude of the damage caused by the fire disaster.

The NUJ hoped that, the committee would complete its works within the timeframe, as doing so would enable the state government to assist the victims in earnest.

It also urged the state Government to ensure the provision of motorable roads and fire equipment in and around the markets to avoid future occurrence and called on traders to support and cooperate with the committee with a view to complete its assigned responsibility.

The statement also commended men of the federal and state fire service for working tirelessly to control and quench the fire.

The Council further thanked the Governors of Kebbi and Rivers States for their support to the victims at this trying moment.
