Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN) is a non-governmental, non- profit, non-sectarian, and non-political organization of Nigerian female Medical and dental practitioners, who are qualified and registered according to the accepted national regulation of the medical profession in Nigeria.
Recently, the Kano branch conducted its election, hand over and inauguration of excos.
Dr. Binta Jibir, MWAN Chief Electoral Committee and ex-official gave a brief information on how the election was conducted and thanked the outgoing excos for a job well done.
Dr, Jibir congratulated the incoming excos and called for team work and dedication to move the association forward.
In her remarks, the outgoing President Dr. Hadiza Saidu, expressed her gratitude to the outgoing excos and gave a secretarial report, highlighting sources of funds, activities and achievements during her tenure.
She also spoke about members participation in regional and national programs, associations response to Covid-19 and the just concluded MWAN PAS project. The MWAN PAS Project was on advocacy and research on childhood killer diseases in Kano.
“There are pending issues such as deductions from AKTH which came to a halt December, 2019, courtesy visit to Kano first lady for the conferment of patronship, honouring of some members, launching of WORTHI project, MWAN Kano input on the ongoing national constitution review and amendment, among others” she added.

Shortly after the inauguration, the Excos held their first executive meeting.
MWAN was formally inaugurated on 23rd April 1977 at University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. Dr. S. Oludayisi Oduntan, a renowned Professor of Public Health, is the Founder and first Convener of MWAN, who having attended the 14th International Congress of Medical Women’s International Association (MWIA) in October 1974 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, came back to Nigeria and convinced some Nigerian medical women on the need for the National Association.
The vision was fulfilled on 4th June 1975 when Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Ibadan Branch, was officially inaugurated during a meeting held at Department of Ophthalmology, UCH, Ibadan, Oyo state of Nigeria.
Presently, MWAN has 31 state branches.
