The Kebbi State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has alerted chairmen of 11 local governments that are flood-prone area in the state to prepared for possible disaster during raining season.
The Executive Chairman of the SEMA, Alhaji Sani Dododo, gave the warning while meeting with the 11 local government chairmen in Birnin Kebbi.
According to Dododo the purpose of the meeting is to intimate the Local Government Area (LGA) chairmen about the implication of the rainfall pattern this year on the annual flood outlook with regards to Kebbi State.
Dododo said against the 2020 seasonal rainfall prediction by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMAT), “it has become necessary to caution these eleven LGAs to brace up against the possibilities of destructive due to windstorm and flooding due to heavy rainfall this year.
He said the eleven LGAs likely to be affected are: Birnin Kebbi, Bagudo, Bunza,Augie, koko/ Besse, Shanga, Ngaski, Yauri, Argungu, and Zuru. He therefore urged the chairmen to come up with precautionary measures, and also intensify efforts towards ensuring communication flow between their communities and the state government for effective emergency managements.
However, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Hassan Muhammad-Shalla, has also enjoined the chairmen to begin stockpiling of relief materials for unforeseen disaster.
He emphasis that disasters do not give notice before they struck; he advised the chairman to ensure prompt distribution of the relief materials to victims whenever the disaster happens.
