Covid-19: ICRISAT to distributes free seeds to 10, 000 farmers as palliatives

International Crop Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD) and in conjunction with other agricultural development partners flagged-off the distribution of free improved seeds to smallholder farmers as palliatives ahead of the 2020 planting season.

Speaking during the occasion, ICRISAT country representative in Nigeria, Dr Hakeem Ajeigbe, stated that, the situation at hand really deserves for intervention to farming activity in the country adding that the institutes and some other partners have deemed it fit to distribute the seeds as palliatives to smallholder farmers.

Each beneficiary will be given one crop that will be planted in a hectare adding that, the seeds palliative will be given to 10, 000 small holder farmers in 13 selected states, he added.

“We have improved seeds of sorghum, millet, cowpea and rice. These we intend to use our extension workers in the distribution processes to ease the farmers suffering and also to prevent them from consuming their already stored seeds as gains,” he said.

Similarly, addressing newsmen during the event Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Alhaji Sabo Nanono revealed that, the Federal government of Nigeria had also concluded all arrangement to distribute to two million smallholder farmers improved seeds as palliative in this year’s planting season.

According to the minister, the federal government has found it very necessary to intervene in the agricultural sector for being the strong vain in every nation’s development adding that, assisting the smallholder farmers with improved seeds free will go a long way in boosting the nation’s food production capacity especially during the aftermath of COVID-19 pandemic.
